The Institute of Black Imagination (IBI), founded by the visionary artist and creative director Dario Calmese, proudly announces the opening of its first physical location, “Space 001,” at The Oculus in New York City. This groundbreaking space represents a tangible manifestation of IBI's mission to create environments that celebrate and amplify the richness of Black creativity and thought.

"Space 001" at The Oculus is more than just a location; it's an experiential journey into the essence of Black imagination. Inspired by the provocative question, "If we know what Black music sounds like, what does Black space feel like?", this space is designed to be a living, breathing embodiment of Black artistic and intellectual vibrancy. Anchored by the personal archives of multifaceted artists Geoffrey Holder and Andre Leon Talley, "Space 001" is a daring and innovative venture that challenges traditional retail norms, shifting from a transactional to a transformational experience.

Designed as a multipurpose reference library, exhibition space, and podcast studio, "Space 001" is currently under construction, with an expected unveiling in October 2024. This space is set to become a galaxy of Black Imagination, showcasing design elements from across the diaspora. It will feature seating by the Lagos-based designer Nifemi Marcus-Bello, exquisite outerwear by Norwegian Rain, designed by T-Michael, and a rapid-liquid 3-D printed light fixtures by Schendy Kernizan of MIT. The adaptability of every element within "Space 001," from shelving to seating, allows it to oscillate seamlessly between public and private uses, embodying the dynamic spirit of Black creativity.
